Castellina in Chianti
|
The village has ancient origins and the marvellous area in which it is situated was probably seat of a Etruscan-Roman colony. The village is located on a hill from which you can enjoy the wonderful panorama of the Val d'Elsa, until the Colline Metallifere, that block the view of the Tyrrhenian sea.
Very few traces of the medieval fortifications remained, because many new buildings were built over the ancient structures. But in Castellina in Chianti there are however many things to see: among these, the Rocca, a massive building that rises on the main square with a crenellated tower of the 14th century from whose top you can admire the splendid landscape of the Chianti valley. The Rocca is also seat of the Archaeological Museum of the Chianti Senese. The museum explains the history of the ancient territory of the Chianti.
Then, we remember the numerous churches: the Church of the Salvatore, of Romanesque origin, the Church of San Martino in the locality of Cispiano, Romanesque too, attested since the year 998. And more: the Pieve di Sant'Agnese, attested since 1046, and the Canonica of San Michele in the locality of Rencine, that was within the walls of the castle, of which only some part and the base of a tower remain.
